About
Our mission is to create opportunities for people to experiment
freely with visual art media, to learn basic art concepts, to think
critically about aesthetic issues, and to learn about the art of
different cultures and eras. Our in-house and outreach programming is
premised on the position that art can reinforce the belief in an
integrated world of knowledge. We endeavor to serve the community and
the university by making art experiences and learning accessible and
fun for all.
Outreach Programs:
- Art After School
AAS serves more than 560 children ages 5-15. Our AAS teachers provide art lessons at 20 after school sites every other week for one hour. Priority is given to at-risk and special needs youth. In AAS, 84% of students participating this year are from under-served populations, are living at or below poverty levels, and/or have special needs. AAS receives funding from the Kansas Arts Commission, the Target Corporation, and the Mulvane Women’s Board.
- Art Beginning in Childhood
ABC art teachers provide art lessons to 860 children in 55 area preschool classrooms including Head Start, USD 501 Special Education, and USD 345 at-risk preschool classes. In ABC, 73% of the participants are at-risk and have special needs. ABC also provides preschool and day care personnel with a repertoire of developmentally appropriate art activities. ABC receives support from the Kansas Art Commission, the Target Corporation, private donations and the Mulvane Women’s Board.r
- Treasure Chests
Thanks to a start-up grant from the Topeka Community Foundation, the Mulvane offers six educational Art Treasure Chests for checkout to area pre-schools and day care centers. Students learn and experience the Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Space and Value.
- Art in School
Mulvane offers public and private schools the opportunity for sequential art lessons in Fine Art. Our AIS curriculum features hands-on art making, aesthetics, art history, and art criticism as students learn about the elements of art and the principles of design. PTOs, local business, and private donors support AIS.
- Resource Library
Our continually growing lending library contains books, videos, reproductions, and periodicals designed to teach art and to supplement art education programs, toddler through adult.
- Teacher Outreach
Five Cross-curriculum Resource Guides are available for lending to elementary school teachers. These guides use images from the Mulvane’s permanent collection and lessons to support art learning and connections to other curricular areas. Available for checkout.

The Judith Lennox Sabatini ArtLab is made possible by funding from the Sabatini Family Foundation.
Since the opening of the in September, 2006, we have received a few frequent questions, which we would like to answer.
Question: What is the ?
Answer:
The Judith Lennox Sabatini , located below the galleries of the Mulvane Art Museum, is a hands-on art learning facility designed for people of all ages. This exploration area is fun and family oriented. The current activities centers are titled “Art 101: Exploring the Basics,” the first installment of a three part series that will be rotated over the next few years. Art 101 includes fifteen activity stations that explore different aspects of the arts including (but not limited to) contour drawing, mosaic, self portrait, texture, installation art, historical understandings of columns and capitals and cave exploration for hieroglyphs. Each activity station includes directions and reflections and follow-up activities that relate to the artwork(s) on display in the Mulvane galleries.
In addition to Art 101, the hosts a discovery/activity area that is designed to create take-home artworks specifically related to current exhibitions. After creating art in this area, individuals are encouraged to display their art in the gallery and then practice their curatorial and interpretation skills. Every activity has been created to provide a holistic art museum experience. The includes a reading library where participants are encouraged to check out art books and view past exhibition catalogs and other art materials from around the world.
Question: When I visit the , what can I expect?
Answer:
After entering the you will be surrounded by color and the artistic excitement. Immediately you will be greeted by one of our staffers who will assist your experience. The main goal of is to get people to participate the arts, and this includes making art! The artistic opportunities are endless at the and each person has the freedom to choose where they begin their adventure. If you choose, you can first participate in our main bookmaking activity which can be finished either at the museum or at home. For artistic assistance, we have artists on call, who are willing to help you with your project. Once completed, your art project can be displayed in our own gallery space. Next you will find that a popular activity is to create labels with descriptions about the artist(you) which can be placed next to the displayed art. This allows others (and yourself) to play as a curator and interpret the works on display. This main activity with selected art supplies will change with the changing of the Mulvane galleries Currently, this activity is a self designed book illustration project, which has very popular. Are you not interested in making books or hanging your work in a gallery? Then you have numerous other avenues of exploration intended for all ages. You have the opportunity to enhance your art knowledge by participating in smaller and specific activities that include drawing, sculpting, weaving and designing. These activities are designed so that you can participate at your own pace, in groups of friends, or with guided help. One will find that all of our activity stations are designed for fun as well as knowledge. For those not interested in using their hands, they can still participate by reading labels full of artistic information and by watching others make art. For those interested in more detailed reading are invited to sit down in our library and browse through our catalogs from past exhibitions (from all over the world) and books about art. Considering the amount of fun that the Mulvane Art Museum has to offer and that the is free of charge, we are seeing lots of people visiting on a regular basis. The is open during the same hours as the Mulvane galleries, so check your schedule, and we hope to watch you meeting new friends, sharing the excitement, and making art. We implore you to visit the not only because it is fun and important, but most of all because the ArtLab has been designed for you.
We look forward to seeing you soon,
